Definition - “Dinosaur Script” - Refers to a script that should have become extinct around the same time the Dinosaurs did (along with the Article Dashboard and Article Beach scripts). Article Directory Pro is one of those scripts. The reason I'm calling it a “Dinosaur Script” is that it requires your hosting account have Register Globals On. Having this set to on is a security risk, but the script will not work without it being on.
Here is a little background about Php's Register Globals. By php version 4.2.0, released in 2002-04-22, the Register Globals option was turned off by default for all installations of php because it was considered a major security risk, and not because of php, but due to scripts not being properly written.
With the current version of php 6, Register Globals is no longer an option and has been removed by the php developers. This should be raising a lot of red flags for you right now, and give you an idea of how old Article Directory Pro script is, and how long it's been since it was updated to meet current security needs.
This also means that the script will soon be completely obsolete and unusable unless the developers completely rewrite the script.
As far as design goes, the front end is reminiscent of another old article publishing script that I can't remember the name of right now (Article Beach rewritten to be Your Very Own Article Directory?), but isn't too bad. The back end admin section is nicely designed and has the common author/article editing tools. One bad thing in the admin area is that after you create a new category for example, you go to a page that wants you to click on a link to redirect back to the admin home page! Then you have to click on the create category link every time to go back to where you were to create more categories.
Article Directory Pro boasts of having a mass article import tool. Don't get too excited tho, as it requires all the articles you want to be imported to be formatted in a certain way, and once you look at how PLR articles are (there is no standard format so all are different), you will realize it would be easier to just enter the articles manually. Plus, you will pretty much only get the title and article body. You will still have to manually enter through your database or admin area all the author names, resource boxes, keywords and summaries. TMW (too much work!).
Another thing I don't like about Article Directory Pro is that you have to choose articles to be shown on the front page. Having the opinion that less (work) is more, I'd rather just have the script dynamically choose all the articles to show on the home page, and keep the content changing for my visitors and search engine spiders.
I suppose if the developers updated the script to not require Register Globals On, it would be a good general script for smaller to medium article publishing sites, but still not worth $69.00.
My advice? Bypass the Article Directory Pro script, and take your better half out for a romantic dinner.
