site: popscript.com
Service: subscription download service for php scripts
cost: $39.00
Rating: Thumbs Down
As most people know, VIP stands for Very Important Person. In the case of the popscript.com subscription membership site (AKA zwebmasters.com), VIP actually stands for "SUCKER!"...
The sales page for this site seems to imply that for a measly $39.00, you will have accesss to download over 300 php script, graphics, banners and icons. What they DON'T tell you is that your will be downloading A LOT of open source scripts that you can freely download from sourceforge or from the internet.
For example, there is a top sites script download. It's an old version of AArdvark (an excellent, and free topsite script you can download for free directly from the developer, along with the newest version), and several other scripts using the old zoops cms script (also free).
The graphics ... all free on the internet, and the website templates, banner etc. are also free from simply-graphics.com!
A wall paper download script was also discovered to be a free script from easysitenetwork.com. This is when my "shady deal" alarm went off.
After checking out most of the downloads available on the site, I realized there just isn't much of anything that could have been worth even $2.00.
Let me back up in time a little bit here, and let you know how the sign up for this "service" went...
First, I signed up thinking I'd pay with paypal and get access to download afterwards. I was almost right, as it was afterwards, but 24 hours afterwards... After I finally got the emails notifying me my account was activated, I noticed a paragraph in one of the emails that said, if you have problems with an error message about the download link being expired, read the FAQ's to solve a cookie problem.
Well, of course there was the "cookie" problem when I tried to download some of the files. I could download about 1 out of every 6 links I clicked on and some of the download links went to a mysql error message. Come on .. even I know that isn't a cookie problem!
After three emails to support (and no answer to any from their support) I suddenly was able to download the goods. This takes me up to my discovery that most all the downloads offered by popscript were actually open source free stuff.....
I suppose after reading this, I don't need to tell you that the zwebmasters.com / popscript.com subscription downloads service is a rip off in my humble opinon.
Not only that, but after some searches on their site, I found quite a few interesting posts about popscript selling open source scripts as their own. Now I'm up to Very, VERY shady indeed!
Mo need to bother with popscript.com folks. Get all the same stuff for free at sourceforge.net or freshmeat.com
